Giacomo Manzoli

Giacomo Manzoli is a full professor of Italian Film History at the University of Bologna. He directed the DAMS (Drama, Arts, Film and Music Studies) programme from 2007 to 2010 and the Master’s in Film, Television and Multimedia Production from 2012 to 2014. He is currently Director of the Department of Arts at the University of Bologna and President of the CUC – University Cinema Council.
He is also a member of the Committee for Public Funding of Audiovisual Production for the Emilia-Romagna Region and of the Board of Trustees of the Gramsci Institute Foundation.
A former editor of the journals “Fotogenia”, “Cineforum”, “Cineteca”, and “Bianco & Nero” (Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia), he is currently a member of the advisory board of the journal “The Italianist” (Universities of Cambridge, Leeds and Reading), the editorial board of “Studi Culturali” (il Mulino), the scientific committee of “Bianco & Nero” (CSC), of “L’Avventura” (il Mulino) and the steering committee of “Sociologia della Comunicazione” (Franco Angeli). He is a member of the scientific committee for the series “Italiana” (il Castoro Cinema), “Italian Frames” (Mimesis International) and “Cinema Paperbacks” (Carocci).
His publications include, among others, Voice and Silence in the Cinema of Pier Paolo Pasolini (Pendragon, 2001), Cinema and Literature (Carocci, 2003), From Hercules to Fantozzi. Popular Cinema and Italian Society from the Economic Boom to New Television (1958–1976) (Carocci, 2012, winner of the 2014 Limina Prize awarded by the University Council for Cinema (CUC) for best Italian book on the history of cinema) and Il cinema di stato (with Marco Cucco, il Mulino, 2017).
