Gian Luca Farinelli began working with the Cineteca di Bologna in 1984. In 1986, he co-founded the Il Cinema Ritrovato festival with Nicola Mazzanti. On behalf of the Cineteca, he oversaw the creation of Italy’s first film restoration school, L’Immagine Ritrovata, which led to the establishment of the restoration laboratory of the same name.
Since then, he has been internationally recognized as one of the leading experts in film restoration. He has served as director of the Cineteca di Bologna since December 2000.
He played a leading role in the founding of the Association of Film Archives of the European Community and was among the founders of Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project.
In 2022, he was appointed President of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma and joined the Board of Directors of Pathé.
